Press release from Michael Cashman MEP
9th May 2007
CASHMAN BRANDISHES VALENCIAN AUTHORITIES DECISION AS "TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE"

Michael Cashman MEP and Vice Chair of the European Parliament's Petitions committee described as "totally unacceptable" the recent decision by the Valencian Conseilleria for the Territory to approve 4 General Plans in the Alicante province. The plans, which could see the further construction of up to 43.000 new homes, include approval for at least 2 golf courses and in the case of Calpe will mean the construction of houses in an environmentally protected area.

Upon learning of the decision Michael said:

" When it comes to ignoring the rights of citizens nothing the Valencian government does surprises me. The decision by the Valencian authorities to approve these plans shows a complete disregard for the European institutions which are investigating the conformity of Valencia's LUV law with EU laws. Moreover, it shows that the regional politicians have no interest in finding a resolution to the serious concerns the European Parliament and the European Commission have raised in light of over 15.000 petitions received. In other words, they would rather keep the construction industry happy and in business than ensure the laws they pass respect fundamental rights of citizens and residents in the Valencian region. Their concerns are short term profit with long term damage".

Michael concluded by saying:

"It's no coincidence that the Valencian authorities are approving potentially illegal constructions at a time when the Spanish construction industry - in Valencia in particular - are having serious investment and financial problems. Voters in Spain should remember the regional government's actions when it comes to voting in the May 27th elections."
