PLACING THE BLAME
Valencia Life. 22.7.6
The Valencian Government yesterday directly blamed the Socialist Government for the drop in foreign tourists in the Valencian Community for the first six months of this year that saw the three main markets - British French and German - drop by 4,6%, 5,2% and 7.6% respectively, whilst the visitors to Spain as a whole rose by 6%. Commenting on the figures, the Tourism Consellera Milagrosa Martinez directly blamed the Madrid Government for its constant criticism of Valencian land policy.
She added that not onlystate broadcaster RTVE had been part of the campaign, but also 'pulled in 'were such major communications media as the BBC, 'The Daily Telegraph', 'TheTimes' and 'The Daily Express' of the UK; 'Le Figaro' in France, as well as 'Suddeutsche Zeitung', 'Die Welt' and the TV Channel ARD in Germany, all ofwhom had 'jumped on the bandwagon' of the previous land laws.
Mrs. Martinezadded that not helping matters at all were the constant statements from Environment Minister Cristina Narbona to the effect that 'tourists should save water' that came on top of an earlier remark from the Minister in which she alleged that 'the formula of sun and beaches is obsolete'.
